Completion by Jeff Santosuosso

The corner’s missed assignment, bump and run,

allows you to break free. You separate

one stride, then two. Now open, you await

the pass, the focal point of everyone.

He steps back, four steps more and looks downfield.

He sets his feet within the pressure, rush

that threatens him, releases it, a hush

among the fans, precise timing revealed.

Its own tight spiral, like the ball, the play

a cumulative duet, quarterback,

receiver, brash brown rainbow, ballet-

like pas de deux, aerial attack.

What flew is still, what rotated now lies.

He threw a thrill, ball and man synchronized.
