Approaching Retirement by Kenneth Pobo

We were each other’s

favorite pair of old shoes.

One of our friends broke

the rocking chair.

It made good firewood.

Three have died.

Others moved.

We email.  Sometimes.

Time hums like a gnat.

The mirror has news for me.

I turn away.  Night,

is that you at the door?

We used to dance together.

You had all the moves.

I prefer morning now.

A formica table, tea,

the sun’s golden ants

crawling up the window.

Kenneth Pobo has a new book coming out from Assure Press called Uneven Steven.  Also forthcoming is a chapbook from The Poetry Society of Alabama called Your Place Or Mine.
