Wavelength by Rebecca Dempsey

A lone mourner stands at the end of a pier.

He opens a care worn envelope – strands of dark hair whip away.

He then tips an urn up high over the rail.

Grey remains of husband and wife swirl in the air before settling on the water.

There is no pattern on the surface:

Surf and spirit, wind and wave, dark hair and dreams and scattered ashes,

Drift randomly into a gathering fog.

Rebecca Dempsey is a writer based in Melbourne, Victoria. Her short stories and flash fiction have appeared in publications around the world, while she publishes most of her poetry anonymously on social media. She can be found at WritingBec.com.
