The Rendezvous by Aminath Neena

The mystic and the child

Had a mysterious rendezvous

Once upon a starry night

Holding hands all night through

Said the child to her elder

'Kind sire, tell me please of this duress

Why do disappointments occur

Even at the threshold of success

Should we blame it on destiny

Or should we dwell it on imperfection? '

Pointing heavenward towards the canopy

Replied the humble person

'Do you not see those stars smiling, my child

Glittering diamonds high up asunder

And occasionally by the clouds overcast they hide

Then, they shimmer yet one shade brighter

For if not for those clouds, man would fail to perceive

The significance of their own existence

As absence of blessings makes the heart retrieve

Glad tidings with more persistence

And patience had cured many a heart in pain.'

Just then, a tear drop flew from the little one's eyes

And as they both watched, it fell as rain

From the seemingly distant cloudless skies
