The Architect’s Lament by John Daugherty

I am the architect of this poem

My blueprints say that

It is a meta plan

I hope you enjoy my design.

Now I envisioned this poem

As a two story

My story

Meets your story.

But this poem is now your home

You can redecorate it

You can put the fourth wall back up

You can tear the whole thing down

And build that sonnet you always wanted.

But if you tear down my poem

Don’t come by my office

Don’t tell me you did it

Let me pull the blueprint

Out of its tube

Once in a while

And smile.
