hooked by Sean Chapman

we don't feel the fishing hook

pierce our skin and slide through

each one tugging and taut—

weighted with a teensy anchor

like a school of fish too numerous

to count each burden singly

leaves little brunt to bear

so we're surprised when we start

choking and spluttering

drowning under a hulking haul

before we know it we're in deep waters

and there's no one anchor to hoist

tangled in fishing wire we lash out

trying to halt the diving descent

as the bends begin bubbling

and the panic foments

Sean Chapman is a new writer, with an upcoming publication in Raceme, living in Cornwall, UK with his partner and two lovely dogs. After spending his 20's in Manchester and Liverpool he now enjoys the nature, surf and slower pace of life by the sea.
