Electricity by Robert Pegel

I was here with you for a long time.

You must have learned something.

Keep walking,

far past your memories,

into the light of a brand new day.

I know it’s not easy,

but you were born with a soul

that sees.

Don’t question intuition.

You’re one who believes.

There is no surrender to the struggle.

Renew yourself as many times as it takes.

Realize I sent you a blinking light.

Even if they tell you it was just a surge.

You know better.

We are electricity.

Now you need to learn how

to harness it.

Feel the energy run through you

Come alive.

Don’t fear what you don’t know.

You will be able to understand a little

bit more at a time.

Be willing and able.

Steady as you go.

There’s so much you are blessed with.

So much space in your mind

to grow.

I’ll be with you.

Look around.

Feel the silence speaking.

Coincidences will just seem to happen.

Smile from time to time.

Ease your pain.

The sun sometimes

shines in the rain.

You can begin again.

Robert Pegel is a husband and father whose only child, his son Calvin, passed away four years ago.  Calvin died in his sleep of unknown causes at age 16.  Robert turned to writing poetry to make sense of the unimaginable. He thinks it helps him process his pain and loss.  He hopes his poems resonate with others going through difficult times. Robert graduated from Columbia University where he majored in English.  He has only recently begun submitting his poems.  He has been published in Bluepepper, Down in the Dirt, and the Unique Poetry Journal.
