Early Evening by Mark Jodon

 (Pecos, NM 2021)

I walk among cottonwoods.

They stand in prayer silence,

their bare branches raised

toward constellated heavens.

Above me, an arrowhead of geese

targets the pond, descends,

their wings spread wide to embrace

their black water host.

They glide into stillness, settle

into silence.  Cattails and tall wild

grasses welcome these sojourners.

A vesper of wind whispers

quiet blessings upon its guests; and I,

standing in the shadows, fold my arms

across my chest and accept what the wind

has graciously offered.
